Food-Inspired Fashion Takes a Bizarre Turn with Grocery Store Container Purse
The boundary between culinary culture and high fashion continues to dissolve in increasingly absurd ways, and frankly, I’m not sure how I feel about it. The latest example comes from Chomps, a protein snack company that’s launching what they’re calling Le Chic’ken – a handbag designed to look exactly like those clear plastic containers you see holding rotisserie chickens at the supermarket.
I’ll be honest: this feels like we’ve officially jumped the shark in the food-fashion crossover trend. While I appreciate creative marketing, there’s something deeply unsettling about carrying around what appears to be a chicken container as a fashion statement. The bag launches on National Rotisserie Chicken Day (June 2nd), with entries opening at 11 AM Eastern Time on the company’s website.
What makes this particularly interesting – or concerning, depending on your perspective – is that winners receive the purse pre-loaded with three varieties of chicken protein sticks: Original Chicken, Nashville Hot, and Savory Breakfast. Each stick contains 12 grams of protein, 80 calories, and zero sugar, which honestly sounds more appealing than the bag itself.
The company’s marketing team seems fully aware of how ridiculous this concept is. Their senior vice president of marketing, Stacey Hartnett, leaned into the absurdity with comments about “looking like a snack while eating your snacks” and being suitable for both “the runway or running errands.” At least they’re not taking themselves too seriously.
Social media reactions have been predictably mixed, ranging from genuine excitement to ironic appreciation. Some users are calling it their new gym bag, while others are comparing it to luxury handbags like Birkin bags. The desperation in some comments – people calling it a “need” rather than a want – suggests this might actually find its audience.
Here’s my take: this kind of novelty item works perfectly for fitness enthusiasts who enjoy quirky accessories and don’t mind being conversation starters everywhere they go. It’s also ideal for social media influencers looking for content that’s guaranteed to generate engagement. However, if you’re someone who prefers understated elegance or needs to maintain a professional image, this probably isn’t for you.
The real question is whether food-inspired fashion has staying power or if we’re witnessing the peak of a trend that’s about to collapse under its own weight. While I admire the creativity and marketing savvy, I can’t help but wonder if we’re prioritizing viral moments over genuine style innovation. That said, if you’re going to make a statement piece out of a chicken container, at least fill it with high-protein snacks – that’s practical thinking I can respect.
